Happy 2016 everyone!!!

This is my first post for the new year and I must say, I’ve very excited about the year ahead.  Are you?  If not, why not?! Time to get goal setting and dreaming big for 2016!!

I’ve been thinking about writing this post for the past few days, but I’ve been so focused on setting my 2016 goals, I wanted to get them finalized first.

I’ve been setting goals for the past few years, but the big shift in successfully achieving them came when I started writing my goals down and creating vision boards.  Although, I caveat that by saying vision boards are really only the first step; the real work comes from being committed to working on the goals each day.

Goal Setting & Dreaming Big for 2016

Goal Setting & Dreaming Big for 2016

Some of you have asked about my goal setting process, so outlined below are the steps I take:

1.WRITE DOWN KEY AREAS OF FOCUS

To avoid feeling overwhelmed, I begin the goal-setting process by reflecting on my achievements of the previous year.  You may have already read my highlights from 2015 post.  I then begin to think about the big things I want to achieve over the next 12 months in the key areas of my life (health, career, community).  I learned that it’s important to be specific. I’ve added examples of questions to reflect on under each of the themes I consider:

  • Health & Body: What can I do to take better care of my body? What can I do to create more energy in my life?
  • Emotional, Spiritual and Personal Growth: Who do I aspire to be? What fears do I have about the future? What qualities do I wish to develop?
  • Relationships: What are our relationship goals?
  • Social and Fun: How can I have more fun? What new hobby or sport can I start?
  • Family and Friends: How can I give more value to those around me?  How can I listen more to those in my life?
  • Work & Career: What do I want to do with the rest of my life? What is my definition of success?
  • Money and Finances: Is making money or making a difference more important? How can I create more revenue streams?
  • Community and Giving: Where can I give more money, time or support? Who could be my mentor or who Should I mentor?

I then set BIG goals under each of the areas. That way it’s more holistic. Since everything is connected, I prefer to juggle different areas at any given time. I ALWAYS write my goals down with pen and paper – written goals bring clarity and focus as Erykah Badu will attest!

‘Declaring your vision and putting a date on it, as though it will happen, is even more powerful.’  Lewis Howes says  in his book, The School of Greatness: A Real-World Guide to Living Bigger, Loving Deeper, and Leaving a Legacy.  He goes on to say that the goal must be something difficult to achieve, but possible in the allotted time frame through hard work.

2.SOURCE IMAGES

Sourcing images for each goal is the fun part.  Some people cut them from magazines. I prefer to use a mix of my own photos as well as images from the internet. Which ever method you prefer just remember that the act of visualization is very powerful. I used to visualize myself walking down the street in Brooklyn, long before I moved to live here! As you’ll see (bottom right) from the first vision board I created back in 2011 when still living in London.

3.TIMELINE

Rolling up the sleeves and getting to work each day is where the magic happens. Set weekly, monthly and quarterly deadlines to stay on track.  I’m thankful to have accountability partners to keep me motivated.

4.REVIEW DAILY

Carve out time first thing in the morning to review the goals you’ve set.  That way, you’ll start each day with a sense of purpose and clarity.  By doing so, you’ll help manifest your major goals into your subconscious mind.

5.ACTION, ACTION, ACTION!

This is the most important step.  As important as setting goals is, they are wasted without consistent action.  One of my goals for 2016 is to be much more consistent on a daily basis.

I’ll end with this very relevant Henry Ford quote, for some reason I’ve been seeing it posted everywhere today. The universe must be trying to tell me something!

“ If you think you can, or you think you can’t, you are right.”
Henry Ford

How about you? What are your plans for 2016? Whatever you have planned. I know with a solid plan in place, even the biggest goals are possible.
